Project:Pong Pens
Project Started:1/1/2005Project Status:For Sale

Goal of Project:
Hand turned wood pens made from leftover Pong wood!
One of my favorite projects from 2004 was the making of my Pong cabinet. After making the cabinet, I was left with some great red oak strips that were used as blocking to hold the pong together. I finally decided to use that wood to make a few wooden ink pens. This wood makes for some unique looking pens with a touch of arcade history. Most of the pens have discolorations, nail holes, screw holes etc from the wood's day in Pong! I've made a handful of these with the wood I had left.. Check out the process of making them below!
I think I have some more wood in the attic, so some day i'll drag it down and make a few more.. if you're interested in one drop me a line! Above is a pic of some other pens i've made over time.. Walut Burl, Tulipwood, CocoBolo, Acrylic, Padauk and the pink one on the far left is Juniper from a friend's fallen tree in our recent hurricanes.. The wood really is pink like that!

Hi Brian, Pens are great. I could use one for Christmas!

nice. did you scavenge the hardware from existing pens, or is there a place to buy the metal bits separately?

You can get pen 'kits' that contain all the guts at places like Woodcraft and Pen State.
